ABOUT OZ POETIC SOCIETY           | A | A |

A MESSAGE TO ALL

The Australian Poetic Society was created through an idea of a published Australian poet, who discovered the trials and tribulations of becoming a published poet in a market dominated by fiction.

What had been unearthed, was the lack of a support basis from Australian publishers for Australian writers and the lack of intent of the Australian market. Quite a shock considering Australia's poetic roots date back to the pioneers. Surprisingly, a broad support structure from overseas publishers was accidentally exposed, as well as a market with an intent that casts an ominous shadow over the Australian market.

Another aspect revealed, was the extreme difficulty to find any help regarding the aspects of publishing houses, manuscript guidelines, where to have your works independently reviewed and the tender subject of contracts. All of which is a foreign language to anyone just beginning.

On a positive note, numerous countries around the world have created establishments funded by local, state and federal governments or by private means. These establishments in their own ways have helped raise the awareness and support of poetry on all levels. This is where the revival of poetry starts from, and it was time for Australia to contribute to the revival, with aid and support.

What the Australian Poetic Society aims to achieve; especially through this site, is information regarding publishers and their guidelines to submitting a manuscript, how to formerly approach a publishing house as well as other detailed issues regarding poetry and publishers. In the future, the Australian Poetic Society hopes to gain the support of independent editors willing to review the works of those who feel, trust and believe that their work(s) are ready for print and to be shared and enjoyed by all.

In the long run, the Australian Poetic Society hopes to have guided many Australian poets through the tough means of locating and securing a publisher of poetry and/or prose through the pre-publication stages, and through to the final product; release. So far, the Australian Poetic Society has guided numerous poets' to successful appearances; spotlight features for journals, magazines and e-zines as well as self-published titles. The Australian Poetic Society is moving in the right direction, bringing to light the heritage that once was a household presence.

The Australian Poetic Society will gladly guide where possible, a poet with information in regards to contacts. The Australian Poetic Society is not a literary or representative agent and will not enter into negotiations with outside parties on behalf of a poet.

The Australian Poetic Society is here for you, the poet. If you require assistance, please do not hesitate to search the site and/or contact us.

1 2007 saw the Australian Poetic Society become the Oz Poetic Society. A minor name change that has not affected the integrity nor structure of the society.

Regards,

Anthony S.
